My work with addictions is a highly compassionate approach, exploring with the client what the stressors or conditions have been which has led to addictive behaviors. Substance abuse and addiction therapy goes well beyond mere physical dependence. Sudden life stress, environmental cues, and social networks can all combine to create powerful agents for relapse. Our approach to addictions therapy focuses on the strengths of the individual, using those strengths to live without substances, leading to a fully authentic life. We individually tailor treatment plans based on each person’s strengths.

Addictions impact so many people in so many forms, including their loved ones, often in Co-Dependent relationships with the addict. But Addictions serve a role and meet a need, and that has to be identified and alternatives found, for treatment to succeed. Many people avoid and hide from pain and suffering in their lives. With support you can face it and get your life, future, and dreams back.

David Gallick, MSW, LSW, LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

480 Pierce Street, Suite 300, Kingston, Pennsylvania 18704

While I am not a Certified Addictions Counselor, I am willing to work with people struggling with addictions as long as they are taking seriously the need for help through a 12 step program, or outpatient and group therapy. I can work with the couple or family to cope with the dynamics of addiction and the need for a systemic approach to dealing with the disease. If the person is not engaged in any recovery program, I can assist him/her in finding the necessary resources to begin his/her recovery process. Addiction is never an individual issue, it is always a marital and family issues. Helping the family to understand addictions and their role can give them insight and understanding.

The purpose of Addiction Counseling is to help the client identify for him or herself if there is an addiction present. If this is the case, a variety of cognitive behavioral techniques are utilized as well as mindfulness exercises to help with focusing and how to cope with difficult emotions in healthy ways to become abstinent. In addition, there is a focus on stengths, and what the client has done in the past to abstain from using the substance of choice. Thus, the client can try and implement at least some of these techniques again and stay away from triggers and past negative behaviors that led to relapse. There is also focus on self-esteem building and how to prevent relapse in the future once the client is abstinent.
