Addiction is something that helps us feel better. Here's where it comes from. As kids, we're supposed to bond in a healthy way with our parents. It's through this bond with our parents that we learn how to regulate ourselves. When we don't bond in a healthy way, or don't learn how to self-regulate through our connection with our parents, we need to do it some other way. That's where addiction comes from. I work with clients with sexual addictions, such as compulsive pornographic internet consumption. Research on the impact of such addictions is used to determine if or how this information fits with client experiences. This information is combined with the client's unique experiences to determine the level of honest commitment to change. If change is sought, we then work to identify triggers and devise coping strategies to intercept the chain of events leading to relapse.
