In this generation, the growth of individuals with addictions is very significant. Addictions originally were isolated to alcohol and drugs. Today’s addictions are understood to also include, food, sex, money, gambling, video, internet, internet games, internet chatrooms, internet pornography and other types of prolonged, repeated and out of control behaviors and actions. There are many kinds of addictions and they all have "loss of control" as their foundation. Substance abuse is rampant in our country, and yet it always begins and ends with the individual. Happiness, wellbeing, peaceful feelings...these are all attainable without the use of substances. It's just often easier and faster to use drugs or alcohol to attain them! Treatment focuses on the uniqueness of each person and the talents and gifts they were given, but are not using in their lives. Mindfulness meditation is a learned skill along with self acceptance and freedom from bondage to a substance. The ability to separate and befriend ourself is crucial to recovery.
