Our therapists will provide a safe and supportive space to address the underlying causes of addiction and develop strategies for recovery. They can help individuals gain insight into their addictive behaviors, identify triggers, and learn healthier coping mechanisms. Tools will be offered to manage cravings, build resilience, and improve overall well-being. Additionally, therapy can address any co-occurring mental health issues that may contribute to addiction. Furthermore, they will provide a non-judgmental environment where individuals can receive support, guidance, and encouragement throughout their recovery journey.

"Addiction", whether it be over-using drugs, internet, sex, etc., is a means of seeking pleasure in order to mask difficult feelings and thoughts that you may be dealing with. Sometimes, the pain of difficult or traumatic experiences becomes so intense that we unknowingly turn to unhealthy means of gratification. It is my goal to collaboratively, delicately and thoughtfully explore the underlying reasons of your excessive use of drugs, internet, etc., and support the working through and acknowledgement of the feelings and thoughts associated with the underlying reasons. If you are persistent in obtaining health and a happier existence, you will experience healing and release from pain.

I provide individuals with a safe space where they will have the opportunity to openly address any aspect of their life that may present difficulties while trying to overcome addiction. Psychotherapy can also be effective for individuals who have a history of addiction and are emotionally and interpersonally vulnerable. I can offer coping-focused psychotherapy to help you learn the practical and specific ways in which you can cope with your problems. These may be addiction, relapse prevention, panic, anxiety, and depression.

My work in addictions take the approach that the addiction serves a purpose to the client and that without understanding the purpose, recovery is very difficult. We focus on strategies to manage/lessen/eliminate substance use while at the same exploring how substance use has served us - such as protecting us from uncomfortable feelings, or making us feel invincible, or bringing us a sense of control, to name a few.

My approach to counselling is attachment based and trauma informed. I have extensive training in emotionally focused therapy, the gold standard in couple's therapy, which I apply in my work with couples, families, and individuals. Addiction often isolates us and keeps us from forming meaningful and intimate relationships with those most important to us. During our sessions I will be engaged and focused on helping you to make the positive changes you are looking to make and helping you to build stronger and more authentic relationships.

Contrary to what is believed, addiction usually starts with a positive impact on a person’s life and even sometimes saves their life. However, as the time goes by, this creative adjustment becomes outdated and turns into a problem. Therefore, working with addiction should not be about illuminating the symptoms or the manifestations of the addiction, but rather trying to understand the reasons underlying the addiction and the function that it used to serve.
