I am not an addiction "expert," but see addiction as a response to anxiety and/or depression. I believe that the issue of addiction is, to a large degree, a spiritual issue in that people turn towards addiction when life feels overwhelming or unbearable. I strongly encourage my clients to seek medical assessment when warranted. I also encourage my clients to participate in the various 12 step type groups who have a record of great success in helping people overcome addictive, self-destructive choices.

I do not hold any specific credentials for treating addictions. I have formerly worked in a Chemical Dependency treatment facility and have a great deal of experience working with people who have budding addictions or who need post inpatient follow up therapy for addictions. While this is not an area I would consider a specialty, it is an area in which I have an interest and experience.

Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.
