Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. There are so many reasons why people struggle with anger. One of them is the general opinion that anger is bad. For that reason, many of us are not taught how to properly express it. Anger is just a feeling. It's what we do with that feeling that determines whether it's good or bad. I help people to recognize their anger and learn effective ways to calm themselves down, cope with their feelings, and communicate them in a safe, appropriate and beneficial way.

I see a difference between "anger" and "rage." Anger comes when two people see things differently and one feels he or she has to "win" or to convince the therapist. My approach of "intersubjectivity" guards against this. Each person has a subjective way of perceiving something that intersects with the other person's subjective way of perceiving the same "something," but the key is that when we understand the hows and the whys of how each sees things the way they do, there is room for empathy for the others perspective without feeling one is losing some sort of status. On the other hand, "rage" comes from shame and involves the wish to obliterate some aspect of the other person.

Anger is normal emotion that everyone experiences. It becomes a problem when one expresses anger inappropriately or one lacks the proficiency to express any emotions but anger. I use Humanistic and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help my clients understand their anger, improve their emotional experience, and express their emotions in healthy ways. A healthy emotional life is the cornerstone of living a full and successful life.

I have experience treating anger problems in group and individual formats using relaxation/awareness training as well as cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients learn more effective ways of expressing and managing angry feelings. Anger itself is a normal and often healthy response to a triggering situation however often times anger is demonized as a "bad" or "dangerous" emotion.

You may think that you need anger management because you feel angry but you will quickly learn that it is normal and even healthy at times to feel and communicate anger. Anger management is only needed if your behaviors while you are angry are hurtful to yourself or others. In working to manage your anger, we will identify and explore triggers to your anger, body cues that signal that you are feeling angry, and process the thoughts and feelings that contribute to feeling angry. I will encourage you to examine and challenge your thought process and to engage in healthy ways to communicate your anger so that your needs are not neglected and you do not violate the needs of others.

I am committed to helping you fully express yourself and to helping you find productive uses for your anger. I tend to be more interactive than many counselors and strive to be clear and direct, down-to-earth and practical. I use a number of techniques, selecting from each as it seems appropriate. However, I have found that techniques are not as important as the working alliance that the counselor and the client build together. I strive to create a private, non-judgmental environment that feels like a natural, normal conversation, but turns out to be like no other conversation you've ever had.

Irritability and anger interfering with your relationships at work, school, or home? I can help you regain control over your emotions, allowing you to think more clearly, make better decisions, and reconnect with the important people in your life. We begin by raising your awareness of situations that seem to trigger your anger; we also identify the internal warning signs that precede an angry outburst. Together, we develop a "toolbox" of coping and distress tolerance skills that you can draw upon before you get too angry. You are not alone in this important task, however. You can count on me to be your support in your efforts to change your life.
