(Specific, hands-on techniques are discussed later in this article) A comparison can be made between our physical health and our emotional health. When the body experiences a severe laceration or other injury, if the wound is left unattended it will get infected. Eventually, it will fester and may even turn into gangrene, a life threatening condition. If, however, the wo....

However, when anger is expressed in an out of control, intimidating, or destructive manner, it can create problems in work, relationships, and even with the law. I help people to understand and to manage their anger. Using humor, patience, and compassion, I facilitate awareness of what thoughts, beliefs, and language create triggers that ignite anger. Additionally, I teach new strategies to keep anger under control and express it in manner that will help you get what you need from others. Anger when used appropriately can be a useful tool to give us the aggressive energy we need to take action when we are feeling helpless or victimized. Unfortunately, it is often misused and becomes abusive, creating whole new problems for relationships and careers. I work with clients to first learn to control their emotional expressions, define the underlying feelings creating the hostility, and learn new skills to better utilize their feelings to resolve conflict in more adult ways.

While anger is a healthy emotion, it can be unleashed in a very unhealthy manner. Learning tools for effective expression and communication can allow your anger to be heard and understood. Without good communication skills and methods of coping, it often feels as though one is up a creek without a paddle. Good intentions can be hijacked. I will increase your awareness and understanding of the triggers and physical cues that are fueling your anger thus allowing you to make different choices. Together, we will uncover distorted patterns of thinking and reacting, learn new techniques of responding and restore your confidence and personal dignity.

Activating the fight-flight system is the single most challenging factor in managing anger, stress, & interpersonal conflict. When anger stems from childhood trauma, EMDR may be useful. When it originates from an over-active limbic system (e.g, in ADD), neurofeedback and/or medication may be indicated. Regardless of the source, some crucial elements are: learning an effective relaxation/self-soothing method, knowing how to check one's pulse so that time-out can be taken to use the self-soothing tools to calm down when elevating (rather than after full escalation), and employing a cardio exercise program. A good Mindfulness practice can be beneficial as well for those who are so inclined.

These skill-based tools include; (1) reducing stress in your life, (2) developing empathy, (3)learning to respond instead of react, (4) changing self-talk, (5) communicating assertively, (6) adjusting expectations, (7) learning to forgive, and (8) retreating and thinking things over. Anger has always been a difficult emotion. We all have it at time throughout our lives; but, don't always know how to express it in a healthy way. It's natural to blame someone or something outside of ourselves for the anger we feel. I help my clients to allow, accept and own their anger. It's OK to feel angry, but it's NOT OK to take it out on others. I teach skills and provide tools that empower my clients to focus on what is going on WITHIN themselves. If not dealt with, particular feelings and emotions about various painful interactions or events in our lives have the capability of re-surfacing in unhealthy ways. I help to re-regulate and break this pattern.

You do not have to be a victim of your anger and anger responses. Often we learn from caregivers how to handle our hurt and anger. Other times, anger can be a symptom of undiagnosed depression. Learning to respond in a way you can feel proud of is something that is not only possible, but if you are motivated, can change easily. After determining the root of your anger, we can work together to change the behaviors and after effects of your rage.

I have found that formal anger management classes provide excellent tools, but that most of those tools go out the window when emotionally provoking events occur. I help people work out the underlying feelings that trigger anger that has been out of control. But I also help people use their anger effectively. Many persons are angry and are not aware of it and they could effectively utilize their anger towards constructive ends. Anger is merely a signal that something is wrong, etc. Thus, the anger is not the problem, it is what you do with it. I will help you "manage" your signals of anger in more effective ways through each phase of the process.
