Anxiety seeps into every part of our lives. A majority of people struggle with this and it can effect our relationships and functioning. There are two things I address in counseling when working on anxiety, Fear and Control. At the root of every anxiety is a fear and the inability to control the situation. Clients begin by learning to identify when you are getting anxious, what triggers your anxiety, positive coping skills and addressing fears and control.

Anxiety and stress are related, but not the same. Anxiety is a fear of what may happen. Anxiety is imagining what you most desire NOT to happen. When we trap emotions and fears inside, the energy gets stuck and can manifest as anxiety. Identification of what you are holding onto or fearing is the way through anxiety. We don't get rid of anxiety. We simply learn how to choose better coping mechanism. www.melissaquiter.com

Anxiety and stress present in different ways, but we know that they can destroy our own bodies and psyches but also make us difficult partners at home and at work. Anxiety and stress have both biological and environmental factors, so we work on this from a holistic perspective. We look at your sleep habits, your overall health, the anxiety handed down biologically and environmentally from family, and the negative, unrealistic thoughts that may be keeping your stuck in an anxious state. EMDR is an excellent non-pharmaceuical treatment for anxiety/stress, because it works from this holistic perspective and pays special attention to the trauma underlying and fueling the negative cognitions.

Everyone experiences anxiety at some point, but for some the anxiety is so frequent or intense that it interferes with their lives or even triggers panic attacks. I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help my clients get a sense of control over their own anxiety. We collaborate to learn skills to reduce the frequency or intensity of the anxious feelings, to tolerate the anxiety when it does occur so they can still function through it, and to practice habits that reduce stress and improve general mental health.

Anxiety can be a debilitating condition that manifests in any number of behaviors including such things as isolating, and OCD rituals, to name a few. Many people who experience high anxiety have panic attacks which literally create a physical response that often mimics a heart attack. Panic attacks are terrifying and can sometimes occur without a trigger. When that happens, the fear of the panic attack is as intense as the anxiety itself which often causes more frequent and intense panic. The root of anxiety is fear. There are a number of therapeutic modalities that have scientific evidence that supports their effectiveness. I work to discover the cause and then find the right modality.
