Our careers are one of the outward expressions of who we are. They are an important statement of self. Sometimes we become stale in our chosen professions. Sometimes we need a whole new venue. Our career counselling work together will explore who you are as a unique person, who you really want to be, as an expression of self. It may involve the deepest question: What brings me Joy?

I have had many careers, deviated from each plan, and fallen off every ladder. I've been lucky that I could afford to, and now I blaze my own path. I would be an educator if educators were more honest, but in our culture, they are trainers, and they cannot guide you. Guidance comes only from your heart and, while you may think you cannot afford to listen to it, I am here to say you must. The risk in your career is not that you might fail, it's that you won't find it. Once you find what fulfills you, there is no question you will succeed. So few people find a fulfilling path, and so few are committed. If you have your path and can commit, you have already succeeded.

For example, working away from home may bring extra income but also problems that make you need to review decisions and priorities. You may be experiencing burn out or a feeling of being overwhelmed and may need to look at some strategies to manage and balance your life better. There may be situations or conflicts at your work that are distressing you and you would like some coaching to deal with them.

My approach to career counselling and planning is taken from the now famous resource Designing Your Life. We apply Design Thinking to reframe obstacles to opportunities in creative ways that may be impossible to imagine now. Then we design plans to give you the inspiration and practical experiences that prove what career decision will bring you the greatest happiness, fulfillment, and reward.

I help clients with addictive behaviours or substance use that is interfering with their ability to achieve a fulfilling career. Through collaborative conversations, clients gain a sense of purpose and direction, overcoming barriers to making meaningful progress in their professional life. Gaining a sense of control over one's life allows for increased confidence and self-esteem. I help clients build the motivation necessary to take steps toward a future filled with passion, thriving, and mental resilliance.

I understand that life transitions can bring about a sense of uncertainty, especially when it comes to your career path. In our career counseling sessions, we'll take a holistic approach, exploring your skills, interests, and values to help you make informed decisions. We'll also look at practical aspects like resume building and interview techniques. While change can be daunting, it's also an opportunity for growth and new beginnings. A systematic review of all or some of those questions forms the basis of a realistic action plan to make a change. I believe you need to identify the crucial questions first, then answer each question in turn. To get clear on what needs to be done and how to go about it may take time and considerable effort, but can be done and always pays in the end.

As one approaches change or beginning in one;s career it is important to link ones choice to something that also fulfills deeper needs and skills. I guide clients through a process of recalling a number of moments in their lives when they were satisfied and pleased with the outcomes of their actions. From this we can deduce a career path that will allow the client to express their greatest assets. Sometimes a person may be out of synch with their current work environment but otherwise on the right track.

It is one thing to embark on a new career path, and a whole other to find the sweet spot of purpose, contribution, vitality and practical stability that leads to a really fulfilling vocation. The latter requires the courage to allow, shape and stay with a vision and the skills to navigate the inevitable peaks and valleys in confidence that are natural to the process. It is necessary to develop the ability to structure your own time toward your goal, maintaining the stability necessary to take new opportunities and creative risks.
