In my approach to counseling with couples, I place a strong emphasis on communication skills enhancement. Useful "homework assignments" are given to couples to work on together between sessions, which provides the couple with a positive structure in the process of improving their relationship communication skills. Examples of "homework assignments" for couples are: "Rules for Communication", and "Needs Lists". Each person writes their own lists. Then, the lists are discussed for clarification and agreement. I review the assignments with the couple in the therapy sessions. I encourage the couple to use these written exercises on an on-going basis, in order to evaluate their progress.

Let me guess. One partner feels alone and like they don't matter and the other feels they are always being criticized and can't get anything right. The more one asks for the other to show up, the more the partner disappears physically and emotionally. Having worked with couples for several years, I find that there are very common themes that pop up. The major issues begin when the communication breaks down. I know the value and have the skills to help restore (or install) healthy communication patterns.
