When a client feels depressed, I take the time to get a history of the depression, as well as a clear picture of overall health status. Often depression is rooted where something is stuck, or unprocessed, and if we can get to the root, and bring understanding and compassion there, relief can come. Depression also is notorious for its long list of false beliefs and cognitive distortions: "It's hopeless." "I'm not worth it." etc. In a good therapy relationship, we can challenge these and build the Truth Muscle, which talks back to the distorted thoughts and asserts what is really true. And sometimes depression is secondary to diet, sleep, stress, etc. If so, this is where we begin the work.

Research shows that the most effective treatment for depression is psychotherapy. Depression can range from feeling down to major symptoms such as having trouble even getting out of bed or contemplating suicide (if you have suicidal thoughts or plans, call the National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-8255). Online counseling is effective for depression because it is easy to access: you can start treatment without even leaving the house.
