There are many varieties of depression, from the nearly universal experience of “blues” to soul-crushing, “can’t lift my head out of bed” depression. We help sort out the source of depression, which can include being emotionally “underfed”, to un-grieved losses, trauma experiences, biological disorders, family emotional inheritance, and a lack of connection with your inner source of guidance. Depression is a syndrome, not a distinct disorder. There are many paths to and out of depression so no one single approach is likely to be effective with many people. So part of my approach is to do a careful evaluation and to be sure that all psychological and biological bases are covered. For some, the chance to share, discuss, express, be acknowledged is primary. For others, alterations ways of thinking and accepting their internal states and responses may be called for. For yet others, involvement of a spouse or significant other may be the ticket. I do refer people for medication if it seems appropriate, but only when it seems truly necessary and other things seem insufficient.
