My approach to helping those struggling with depression is to offer a supportive environment of acceptance where one feels free to share their pain. I primarily use a Cognitive/Behavioral approach. In this approach I work with my clients to help them learn how to increase activities that have given them joy, such as calling a love one on the phone, going on a walk or bike ride in nature and decrease activities that make depression worse such as substance use or watching too much TV. I also collaborate with my clients to help them identify and challenge their automatic negative thoughts about themselves, and replace those negative thoughts with positive and adaptive thoughts and beliefs.

My approach to depression depends greatly on the presenting problem as people become depressed for a variety of situations (anxiety, stress, existential/meaning, grief ). After assessing & evaluating a course of treatment with the client, treatment may involve cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques, Logotherapy to explore life's meaning, or perhaps an exploration of spiritual depression.
