At the beginning of treatment, I work to stabilize someone experiencing depression or depressed mood. We discuss the benefits of a daily routine, scheduling pleasant activities, social support, nutrition, exercise, overall wellness & spirituality. We then move into work understanding the history of the depression & potential causes, as well as triggers of the depressed mood. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which has been researched & is an evidence based treatment for depression. This therapy teaches you how to become aware of your thoughts & the way they impact your mood. It is not difficult to learn & you will see benefits from the tools & techniques we discuss when you apply them!

Depression numbs and immobilizes. You may feel stuck, without light, hope, or energy. This phenomena is both physical and mental. Dr. Staat can help you get unstuck by teaching you to deal with both sides: (1) to notice and change negative thought patterns; and, (2) to pay attention to how suppressed emotions express themselves through your body. Learning to express thoughts and release suppressed feelings can lead to permanent recovery. Medication can also be an important adjunct to treatment, especially when depression is severe.
