Beaumont Counseling Services views Depression in a somewhat different way than others in the field. It is our view that Depression has many similarities to addiction; where the brain seems to be "addicted" to being sad and/or negative. In this approach, clients benefit from learning new strategies of thinking that will serve as a substitute, and eventually a replacement, for their current maladaptive, depressed way of thinking. A systematic strategy is used to promote positive thoughts and overcome learned helplessness.

The word "Depression" is used to describe so many different feelings. It can take courage to admit to feelings of depression, but it is also a sign of wisdom to seek help to deal with it. Depression can interfere with our ability to care and be cared for, to give and receive, and to love and be loved. Depression is more than just "a bad day" or feeling blue. It's not a sign of weakness nor is it something you can just snap out of. We believe that together we can help you climb back up the hill to transform your mood, your feelings and your life.

Depression is far more common than has been generally thought. Folks find themselves feeling hopeless, unable to concentrate, lacking initiative, having difficulty making decisions, trouble sleeping etc. Depression involves a slowing down of the entire human organism as well as lowered self-esteem. It is as though the energy has left the conscious side of the psyche and gone down into the unconscious. Often our dreams and images can lead us to discover the deeper meaning of the depression. Therefore sometimes depression can be a pathway to self-discovery. For that reason I concern myself not simply with symptom relief, but with building a richer, fuller consciousness.
