Depression often seems to come out of the blue. Medication often helps, but the treatment is not complete without psychotherapy. Depression is rooted in past and recent events that are seen as insignificant, but are not that insignificant after all. My goal is to help you identify the events that caused the depression and help you manage the emotions and beliefs associated with it.

I teach clients with mild to moderate depression symptoms that depression can often be a messenger from our deepest self and/or a call to action. I actually suggest specific actions that they can take to break out of the depression--inaction cycles. I suggest that they do an "inner dialogue" with the depression and ask it what is the cause of the depression. I suggest that if they cannot get at the "root cause" of the depression that they at least attempt to get to the region of their psyche that the depression is coming from. I suggest hypnosis to them. Research has shown a marked reduction in depression with the stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system with hypnosis.

Depression is different from simply feeling down or blue. Depression is a mood disorder that affects you in different ways, and may include feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, guilt, and/or worthlessness. Other common symptoms include a lack of energy, difficulty focusing, a change in eating or sleeping, and a loss of interest in sex or other pleasurable activities. Severe depression can also lead to thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is very effective in helping people overcome depression through changing ways of thinking and relating to the world. I help clients understand the depression and incorporate ways of managing and changing their feelings.

Depression can be situational to a loss, disappointment, or acute incident. Depression can also be recurrent, relapsing and remitting. Depression is always parasitic, unpleasant and a dark cloud that can hover and cast shadow over our lives and relationships. Therapy with me seeks to achieve remission of depression and then we will focus on preventing relapse. I see depression as biological, situational and interpersonal. Therapy will explore precipitating stressors, contributory biological factors, and personal factors. Based on this knowledge we explore new ways on interacting with your world seeking to prevent relapse and manage risk factors as they emerge.

Sadness and Depression are often challenges we may encounter in our lifetime. Feelings, thoughts and behaviors associated with them can at times overwhelm and even paralyze us with their power. In a supportive and empathic environment I help clients understand these feelings, progress through their isolation with them, find a way through their tight hold and learn to live productively again.

I have found the Cognitive/Behavioural model of therapy the most efficient one to use with clients suffering from long term depression. Acute depression responds well to Relational, Experiential and Attachment based models of therapy. Most important however, is a warm, empathic, supportive environment in which to explore and resolve client's needs
