While some depression can be circumstantial and others bio-chemical. Depression is not something that ususally changes overnight but if you are willing to do the work, put some time and effort into your therapy, you will overcome.

My approach to working with depression is threefold. First, we identify the specific symptoms of depression that you are struggling with. We create a plan to combat the symptoms. For example, if you struggle with isolating yourself, we talk about small steps to be around others. At times, I involve your family doctor or a psychiatrist to review your medication if that fits for your lifestyle. Next, we review all previous depressive episodes to find the common thread that triggers the depression. We use this information to help be aware of and prevent further episodes. Last, I help you identify and work through the events or relationships that are likely causing the depression.

When you are depressed you may feel sad, weepy, hopeless, helpless, unmotivated, maybe sleep too much or not enough and also lose interest in sexuality, your friends and activities. These feelings last a long time and are really hard on relationships. You may think that you will never be happy again. You may have tried drugs but now want to take charge yourself of the changes you want to feel in your life. Counseling starts with your story of what is happening. I will ask lots of questions to help you get a clear idea of the causes and patterns in your life. We'll work on coping strategies and maybe try therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You'll feel more content with your life.

Depression is a debilitating experience because if you are depressed you are probably very hard on yourself and extremely self critical. much so that you lack enthusiasm, motivation and self esteem . You have probably internalized your anger against yourself . You probably had to do that as a child because there was no where to go with you difficult and uncomfortable feelings. Were you told you were too sensitive? You are not. You need a strong, potent therapist who you can rely on while you are going through re-organizing your internal world to help you make the changes in your life that you need to make.
