Depression is often the tip of the iceberg, in terms of what is happening with the psyche. It lets you know something is wrong, and then, you must explore the underlying causes. Once you have done that, relief is possible. There are times when the depression has been around for so long that you may have forgotten what it feels like to feel good...in such cases, a combined approach, in cooperation with your MD, with therapy + medications, will improve your prognosis.

I help my clients view depression as a mental, emotional, and physiological condition that can be treated with a full application of the tools, insights, and aids that are available from a variety of sources. These will include cognitive techniques to redirect unhelpful thought patterns, behavioral practices such as exercise, sleep hygiene, and life style adjustments, and social/relational interactions with significant others. We will also explore patterns of reactions to past and current life stressors that might perpetuate a cycle of depressive symptoms. Depression isn't just bouts of profound sadness. It can also be anger, feeling hollow or numb, unexplained crying, isolating, and so much more. Through our work together we will try to learn how your thoughts, feelings and actions influence each other, then work towards creating change in their interaction and thus, bring about a greater sense of contentment and happiness.
