I do not abide by universally accepted BMI's or stereotypes regarding dress size. A client should be happy with their figure the way they are. If not, they must curb their addiction to food. Portion control seems to work well along with music therapy. It used to be thought that listening to the radio boosts appetite at mealtimes. By the same token, discontinuing the music can help a heavy person reduce.

Human beings develop habits, and rituals, and addictions to cope with stresses and trauma and emotional pain in living. We compulsively seek to be in control and relieve our tension. A part of the “old brain,” or our primitive defenses, may compensate for emotional pain by prompting us to eat too much, or not enough, or by binging and purging. Once a pattern gets started it becomes more habitual and it is difficult to stop. For some people compulsive eating or dieting is just a way to get rid of bad feelings. The problem is that the bad feelings always come back. Compulsive and addictive behaviors - like obsessive and compulsive disorder, gambling, sexual addictions, eating disorders, cutting, etc. - can work very much like alcohol and substance abuse. They are ways of controlling strong emotional reactions of anxiety, anger, sadness, loneliness or guilt.
