People eat in unhealthy harmful ways often because of emotional or circumstantial reasons. But whatever the cause you are tired of the situation and want to change things. Maybe you have sought medical advice for an eating disorder. I will ask you to tell me your story and ask lots of questions for clarifying detail. Maybe you will identify low self esteem or issues about power, control or relationship. Counseling will support you by looking at why you use food and eating as a strategy to cope with your problems. We may talk about advertising pressures that make you want to look like a model or entertainer. We will look at eating management strategies and help you to gain in personal power.

Food is extremely seductive as a magical comfort to cover up pain. Eating disorders are widespread, misunderstood and not your fault. Jungian psychotherapeutic counselling strives to develop trust and reduce anxiety and shame. Anorexia and bulimia are the symptoms and if we can deal with the underlying cause, we can cure the symptoms. Letting go of the control food has is hard, but moving beyond the eating disorder can liberate you to invest your energy in new opportunities instead of continuing to hurt yourself. I do counselling in eating disorders locally in Halifax, Nova Scotia and by e-counselling throughout North America.

I offer encouragement and hope for those suffering with eating disorders, one of the most serious and debilitating challenges we can face. I share evidence-based information and approaches for you and your family. I address aspects that are often overlooked in medical treatments: the role of trauma, power and control, women's body image and social and peer support. The energy of shame, frustration and guilt that often go along with eating disorders can be transformed to your advantage. Also, if you are a family member or friend seeking information on how to best support someone with an eating disorder, I have excellent options and information to share with you.

As an addictions specialist and having worked extensively with people with both borderline and PTSD/CPTSD I often encounter people with a history of eating disorders. I approach them through the lens of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach with the idea that each person is unique, developed their eating disorder or problem with food in a unique way, and therefore their treatment will also be unique. Self directed behavior therapy, cognitive/cognitive behavior therapy - are useful tools but they are not the total answer. Usually people need a caring and compassionate approach that teaches them to be gentle with themselves, accept their bodies, and learn to make changes slowly. It works!
