Even if a person with an eating disorder recognizes that their behavior is self-destructive, they often feel powerfulness to change it, because of the temporary relief that it brings. Seen, in this way, as a form of addiction, there is almost always an underlying relational component to the compulsive behavior. The problematic behavior is a very meaningful expression of some tension or conflict which has been internalized as a way of managing difficult feelings. Though we may employ specific behavioral strategies, my primary goal will be to help you identify and understand what your behavior is trying to communicate, and to resolve it so that you may have a healthy relationship to food.

I work with overeating, but do not work with under eating or bulimia. I view overeating as a way of regulating difficult feelings. While the need to calm and sooth is legitimate, the method is an indirect unskillful way of coping. I teach clients how to use their emotions to support themselves instead. Or, clients learn to seek comfort from connecting with an inner nurturing presence—or to seek comfort from someone else or an activity. I find overeating is due to anxiety, and we work, instead with the cause of the anxiety to avoid getting anxious in the first place.

As a woman, I know all too well the ways that you may find yourself in a painful relationship to food and to your body. Society's unrealistic standards and preoccupation with women's external beauty can challenge a woman's self worth at various stages of life. Perhaps this is old news to you but you don't know how to free yourself from it. In our work, we begin by listening to your body and cultivating a relationship with it. Getting to know your body on a deeper level and your full range of feelings, is getting to know you and what really matters to you. It may feel daunting or strange, but I assure you it is one of the most rewarding processes towards truly enjoying your body and food.

I work with compulsive/emotional eaters to get to an understanding of what feelings are hiding underneath the eating behavior. Knowing about the feelings and finding other ways to deal with them is key to stopping the compulsive eating. In Compulsive Eating workshops, I use Geneen Roth's anti-dieting approach. This is about using certain behavioral tools to change eating habits. For example, not eating in the car or not eating standing up. Each person's journey through this struggle is unique and I will offer you my guidance and understanding as well as a sociological approach to how the diet and fashion industries brainwash women into hating their bodies.

I will look at the best approach for treating the eating disorder, based on your strengths, symptoms, severity and issues that are present. The effectiveness really does depends on being able to address the physical as well as the psychological aspects of your situation effectively. The aspects that will need to be addressed are nutritional needs, medical, a healthy relationship with food and to get to the root causes off life and its challenges and how to cope effectively and efficiently. The effective treatment tends to be a combination of therapy, nutritional assessment and counseling and support group. In some severe cases, residential treatment and or hospitalization has been effective

While most eating disorder issues are treated by cognitive behavioral methodologies or specialized outpatient/inpatient programs, Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, PhD provide relief first and foremost for the brain of one suffering from an eating disorder----without giving them medication. We believe that the neural circuitries responsible for the compulsive behaviors with eating are not necessarily only a neurotransmitter issue but of overused neural networks that affect the harmonization, balance, and decisions of the whole brain. Understanding and recovering from an eating disorder can be excruciating. The roots of this disease run deep and are supremely impactful, not just for the sufferer, but for family and friends. The powerful feelings of helplessness, anger, and fear felt by those who have suffered from an eating disorder or know someone who has can feel overwhelming. Many people hold common misconceptions about eating disorders. That lack of awareness can lead to further disconnection between those who suffer directly from an eating disorder and their loved ones. In our work together, we will work to understand what led to the eating disorder and help you to get your life back.

We will look together at the onset and occurrence of the eating disorder, and discuss what you think might have contributed to it. I will ask you to journal for 10 min. first about what you are feeling and thinking whenever you have the impulse to the problem behavior for a week, whether you act on the impulse or not. Looking at the journal, we can begin to get into the triggering feelings at a deeper level. We can use EMDR, talking, body awareness and other techniques to get deeper into the feelings. Together we will come up with alternative ways to take care of those feelings, other than the eating disorder.

Whether you are eating too much or not enough, eating is tied to emotions. If you could simply restrict your calories to lose weight, you would have done it already. Talking to a therapist gets to the root of food issues and allows you to see what's really going on and to make changes. Food is not only physical nourishment but emotional nourishment at well. If you can't control your behavior around food, something else is going on. In therapy we will explore issues related to food and eating without focusing on calories or the scale.
