The family therapy I do is in situations when a child or teen is acting out. A child or teen might be defiant, or aggressive, or failing in school, or in trouble with the law or abusing substances or lying excessively or acting promiscuously, or some combination of these and other negative behaviors. The family therapy I do is preceded by a thorough and state-of-the art evaluation of both the youth and the youth's system. I then set measurable goals with a family and follow it up with behaviorally oriented family therapy. In this approach, there are specific and structured strategies brought to bear and home, and often and school, to enhance a child or teen's odds of being highly successful.

Family is where we live, love and hurt. Most of us live with the misconception that because most people do the family thing – we should know how to do it. We don’t. Family is one of the hardest things that we can do. It seems like it is supposed to be easy. When you get in the middle of it, it just isn’t. Asking for help can often get families back to where they either use to be or get them to the place that they all crave to be. Family will never be easy but it can be rewarding. Family life is very hard. It will always be hard. There is help. We as Marriage and Family Therapists are trained to understand the dynamics of families. Family therapy looks at the entire family system—parents, children, extended family members—to identify strengths and problematic behaviours. I collaborate with families on strategies for utilizing their own capabilities for resolving problems, and on developing effective communication and problem-solving skills for preventing conflicts. I specialize in working with families of teenagers, which is an age that can be challenging for both the teenagers and their parents.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Families deserve therapists that are trained in and experienced in family therapy. When there is more than one family member in my office, my training and experience helps me help you. Every family member wants to be understood and validated. And the wonderful thing about family therapy is that change can happen much faster, because everyone is working towards a happier shared life.
