Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Families are complex and dynamic entities. Often, different family members get pigeonholed into one specific identity which is pathologizing & limiting, and does not serve them. Family systems teach us how to behave in the world. Dysfunction in families can be very harmful and can set people up to feel doomed. Luckily, there is help. In family therapy sessions we will create an atmosphere of openness and non judgment. Through identifying, and actively working through issues, balance and harmony can emerge.

Family counseling is a most valuable opportunity for helping families in crisis as well as families who may be going through a life transition. Families can become socially, emotionally and psychologically dangerous, confusing, and even internally devastating. Families that are experiencing dysfunctional changes including addictions, emotional and mental illness, abandonment, fierce arguments, new family members, departing family members, new family rules, power relationships and family power changes that happen in an unprepared manner can create emotional traumas of significant proportions. Family counseling serves to restructure a families operation and aims to transform family dysfunction to family function.

In working with families, we will collaborate on addressing the couple's need to be in charge. Family rules and boundaries are sometimes unclear to children. We will work together to communicate your expectations. When acting out, underachievement, conduct problems, defiant or oppositional behaviors present in the children, the the parents need to be on the same page. Your family will learn, insession, preferred communicatin styles; empathic listening, group problem solving skills, tolerance, respect and acceptance of each other. Family members will learn to interact without anger, resentment, sarcasm or disrespect. Parents need to be authoritative without being authoritarian.

If you and your family aren't getting along or are having some form of difficulty, family therapy can be incredibly useful. I would help to give each family member a voice--a way to be heard, understood, and accepted. In fact, I would fight for this on behalf of each family member who feels disregarded, disrespected, or dismissed. I would help each person to feel respected and to be given a sense of dignity as we work together to improve the critically important aspect of communication--something I find wanting in many families.

To me, the people with whom you've chosen closeness, whether related by blood or intentional bonding, are "family." I help family members surmount problems in communication, understanding, decision-making, and boundary setting. I have also worked successfully with family businesses, or business groups that are "family-like," when dynamics become problematic. Sometimes, longstanding patterns or roles need to be addressed and adjusted. Some members may feel unheard, under-appreciated, or discounted, and need a chance to re-establish their sense of belonging within the group. I'm honored to have been part of creating family therapy breakthroughs that truly change peoples lives.

Family therapy can be very effective in resolving problems occurring in a home between parents and children, between siblings, or between separated parents. This form of therapy includes all members of the system who affect one another. Some common reasons families seek out family therapy is to resolve trauma, strengthen bonds between family members, and improve communication.

A family is a unit composed of several individuals, that form its dynamic, communication style, interaction, needs and desires, and sometimes these ‘clash’ or do not go hand in hand or in great harmony, to say the least! When working with families it is important to know that each person and each family is unique and has its own style, challenges and differences in character and personality. Our primary aim will be to explore, with each of you, as well as together, the concerns and challenges and guide you to create a more harmonious and balanced family relationships.

To my mind, nothing is more important than supporting families in raising emotionally healthy children. In our fast-paced, high-anxiety culture, it can be hard for parents to know how best to create a nurturing environment for their children. I encourage parents to spend both quality and quantity time with their kids, to set and hold limits so that the children feel safe and secure and to resolve parental conflicts to that they don't contribute to family tension. Sometimes I work with the parents alone (not the children) and this can be quite effective. At other times it helps to bring in the entire family to observe and change family dynamics.

What future do you want for your family? Stressors can affect families in many ways. Family therapy provides the opportunity to change your family’s relationship to its problems and the effects those problems have on each person in your family. Families come to therapy for a variety of reasons: single parenthood; underperformance at school; birth of a new sibling; unemployment; relocation; substance abuse; mental illness; divorce; blending families; grief and loss. If your family is experiencing difficulty, family therapy is a way to increase communication and understanding, while discovering sources of strength and support within your family.
