It is important to help clients understand that when they marry that they are each bringing in to the relationship their Family of Origin beliefs, values and attitudes. In our first session I teach them that It is important and healthy to have a balance in their ability to function well within their family of origin and also apart from it. I also teach them that Differentiation from their Family of Origin means being able to maintain an emotional connection but not being restricted or reactive because of that connection. My clients benefit due to learning that Healthy human functioning depends on gaining a balance between our thinking and our emotions.

Today family can mean different things to different people. Each family structure is challenged with their own set of difficulties and problems. Whether you are a blended family, single parent family due to divorce or loss, adoptive family, same sex parents, or traditional, we recognize family dynamics can be complicated. Together we will work to develop strong communication skills between each family member, while nurturing and solidifying the family unit. We will work to overcome conflict, heal the wounds of the past, build parenting skills and create a safe environment where all family members can be heard.

Family Counsellor

Registered Clinical Counselor / Canadian Certified Counselor

Unit 12B - 1601 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC V9S 1G5

Typically when I am working with a family there is usually one individual that is identified as "the one with the problem". When families come to therapy with this idea that is the first thing I address. I see the problem as the problem, not the person as the problem. This enables me to work with you and your family in a way that opens up space and freedom for new possibilities. Rather than diagnosing a mental or emotional flaw of any one individual, I work to help the whole family understand problem's and misunderstandings that can influences everyone’s life. When each person is supported to make the changes they each need to make, life becomes much more livable for everyone.

Each family is as unique, as are all relationships. Today, families are not only made up of the traditional two parent same sex couple; but are blended, same sex, single parented, having children raised by grandparents and extended family and friends-more than ever in our history. There are times when all types of families experience difficulties that we can not resolve on our own. As your counsellor, I can provide you with a neutral perspective and provide suggestions and strategies to cope. I can provide a safe environment and provide mediation. All parties will be given an opportunity to express themselves openly, with the benefit of finding a resolution, clarity and peace.

Families develop patterns of being and each member tends to fall into a role. These roles are often passed down through generations. I look at how the roles each members is playing contributes to the stuckness of the presenting problems. We then look at how family members can balance the roles in an effort to create a more satisfying family relationship.

With over 30 years of counselling experience, I have developed Holistic Expressive Therapy which addresses the the unique physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of each family member in therapy. My choice and the way I use each expressive therapy always involves starting from where each person is at and is informed by your primary needs. The Centre For Expressive Therapy provides a nurturing, healing environment where we can build on the inner strengths and resources and then engage in a deeper exploration of the issues. Your resiliency is awakened, healing will take place, and growth will resume.
