Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Registered Clinical Counsellor

West 16th Ave and MacDonald, Vancouver, BC V6K 4M1

As a mother of two, I am constantly witnessing my theoretical background as a counsellor flying out the window. Parenting tests our mettle by the minute, and even the hardiest of us all, get bent. I use an attachment based parenting approach, whereby our bond and connection to our children is primary. Together we work to establish this trust and connection, and all else follows, not necessarily easily, but with conscious choice and understanding of our actions and reactions. I use a collaborative approach for older families, attempting to engage all family members in responsibility and unity.

I enjoy working with all members of families, collectively and at times separately. I have been part of many families, helping them heal and reconnect by determining what needs are not being met and how to work toward improving communication so that each member feels heard and valued. My training at the Satir Institute of the Pacific has equipped me to get a good sense of your family dynamics so that I can support each member and the family as a whole.

If family causes you upset and anguish, going for therapy is ideal. Sometimes, however, family therapy isn’t an option or doesn’t allow enough time for you to process. At times like these, seeing an individual therapist can be invaluable. Working with me, you will feel heard, understood and supported. Together, we will work to help you understand the enormous amount of hurt, confusion and devastation that can occur within the family. As you work through your emotions around family wounds, you will feel calmer, lighter and able to rebuild what was once broken. "A family's lineage is invaluable. Without it, one could not find the true source of one’s neurosis." – Simply Spirit, p. 47

The effect of discord within the family may impact other areas of your life. Often times children need to feel that they have a specific place in the family in order to move through life positively. When this is not the case it may be expressed through unwanted behaviours. Parents may also be struggling to find respectful and responsible parenting techniques that will allow them to obtain the desired behaviours they expect from their children. Together we will find ways to understand each member’s perspective, establish core beliefs and negotiate acceptable compromises in order to restore harmony in your family.

Real Solutions to Real Challenges. Common Sense Techniques. Martin very much enjoys working with families and children. Families are systems operating in close quaters, therefore upsets and miscommunications are natural and should be expected. They can be a source of extreme disappointment and pain or they can be opportunitiesfor growth. Martin is trained in Adlarian family therapy and uses Gestalt approaches to families. He has facilitaed parenting groups and worked with children as young as three years old and granparents who were in their eighties. It is his experience that families can enjoy, help, and grow together and most of the time it takes far less work than what they expected.

Family counselling – it isn’t about figuring out “who’s the bad guy”, or what/who needs to shape up or be fixed. It is about attachment. In family counselling, we focus on what each family member wants and needs, to better understand their deeper experience of conflict and of connection. “Do you love me? Respect me? Am I important to this family? Do you understand and can you help me with the pressures, or the shame I’m experiencing?” are frequently unacknowledged questions family members have. I will provide a safe environment for your family members’ questions to be worked through. Although it can be optimal for all family members to be present, therapy for one or more works too!
