Often a family arrives with an identified patient, that is, in agreement that one member in particular is the problem in the family. Together, we investigate how this family member serves a purpose in the family system overall and how all members function to keep this person in the role of the problem member. From here we explore the roles that all the family members are playing and whether these roles are desirable or not. If not, we consider how to make changes to help the family system function better overall. Often changing one part of the system creates change in the rest of the system too. In this process, each member must feel understood, respected and valued as part of the whole

I help families come together in a collaborative and compassionate way. With a solid grounding in the love you have for each other we define the problem, reveal the family context and design solutions. I also work with special needs children (such as ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Asberger's) who require a structure that allows them to be the unique individual they are within the family dynamic. We collaborate in a compassionate way to provide the family with a containter to meet the needs of all family members. Tension and anxiety are reduced, which gives your family more opportunity to be together as a supportive and loving unit.

The troubles of individuals and couples can affect whole families. Though I do not invite families in as a group I often work one-on-one with the children, parents and siblings of clients. Also, I might meet with combinations such as a mother and daughter or maybe brothers and sisters. Parenting and blending families are big challenges for many. Some people are upset by financial or trust issues or want to improve communication skills. Counseling helps you gain insight and understanding into how families function. You will learn new skills and increase in self esteem and confidence. You can achieve the goal of making the changes you need to make your family life more satisfying.

The term family therapy encompasses a lot. It could mean married or divorced parents with their children, it could mean families with adult children, it could be a mother and a adult daughter or a sibling duo. Whatever the relationship is, the goal of family therapy is to create a space for communicating effectively and often involves things like clearly defining relationships, working through previous conflicts and breaking unhealthy patterns.

Families come for counselling for many reasons. Ultimately, I am here to develop an understanding of your family so that I can help you address whatever concern has brought you in. Often times families come in when there has been a recent life change or event that they are having difficulty navigating on their own. It is then my role to help family members learn how to adjust to their new realities. Alternatively, sometimes families are interested in addressing concern from the past that seem to be interfering with their current family life. Whatever your concern, family therapy can lead to a sense of family cohesion.
