Licensed Professional Counselor

We have two choices in the face of loss, we can choose to protect ourselves and love less in the future, or we can choose to recognize just how precious our relationships are and become even more open-hearted with the full knowledge that one day they will end. I can help you to cope with the initial grief of loss, find your footing again, and make meaning of your experience. Over time I can support you to accept loss and death as a natural part of every life and to honor it as the rite of passage that it is.

I provide a compassionate, calm, empathetic presence for you to work through the denial, anger, guilt, "what ifs", depression, and ultimately, the acceptance of the loss. I guide individuals through this very difficult process. One reason for experiencing profound sadness is to slowly facilitate the ability to let go of who or what we have lost. It is hard to feel the pain of loss in our heart, but if we try to avoid it, then it will remain within us, stuck and undigested. We need to allow ourselves the space to sit with, observe, and feel our own grief sufficiently, in order for us to eventually, at the natural pace of our body, move beyond it.

Unfortunately grief and loss is a part of life. Loss of a loved one, a divorce, loss of a job are all reasons people experience grief. Everyone experiences a loss in their own way. I will help you deal with the grief you are experencing by allowing you to feel without judgement. I use techniques such as guided imagery and breathing techniques to help you face and feel your grief instead of burying it. Sometimes we never get over a loss but with support and help, you can get through it.

You're feeling disabled, like you've lost a part of YOU, yourself. Perhaps you're grieving the loss of your own health or capabilities, a family member, an intimate partner, a friend, a job. You are grieving the loss of a precious dream. Such unbearable loss can affect your sense of yourself. In grieving, you begin at an end, feel overwhelmed and disoriented, and end with a kind of new beginning. When you're in the middle of it, the mourning process can feel endless. And it doesn't help when your social environment expects you to recover sooner than you are ready. Grief is an individual, normal, organic process. Reach out for support from a competent therapist. I'm right here.

You’re overwhelmed. You don’t know where to turn. Your friends and family do not understand your pain. They tell you to “get over it.” They tell you you’ve grieved long enough. You’re feeling misunderstood, unsupported, alone. We can talk in the safe confines of my office where you can share anything you need to share, cry, laugh (yes, that happens also), cry again, and know that whatever you need to do to help yourself heal is possible here. I care.

Whether you have recently lost a loved one, or want to address grief from past loss(es), I am here to support you on your journey. Grief is a powerful emotion, and can be exhausting. You do not have to face it alone. Our culture does not teach how to managing grief. It is easy to become stuck, and confused about how to live with the sadness, and depth of emotion. You may find yourself thinking you are going crazy. Others may expect you to get back to normal far too soon. I can help you find your own inner resources, and understand the emotional requirements of grief. Therapy for grief can help you use your grief experience to develop new wisdom and understanding.

Grief and loss can paralyze us and stop us dead in our tracks. Whether you've lost a loved one or a job or an important relationship, in order to heal you have to process what you're feeling. Otherwise you'll never be able to move forward. In our work together I'll share exercises, practices and tools that honor where you are in the healing process and be your soft place to fall when you need time to reflect and talk.

I understand that grief and loss can be one of the most painful life experiences. Everyone grieves differently and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Sometimes we grieve a parent, a child, a pet, or even our own loss of innocence. I have worked with children who have lost a parent to suicide and I understand how difficult this experience is for children. However, with knowledge and compassion they can begin to process and make sense of their losses. I have also worked with people struggling to accept a medical illness and this loss of health is something to notice, pay attention to, and grieve.

Grief and Loss are often related to someone dying, even a pet. But Grief and Loss can be equally devastating or debilitating when a major life transition occurs. It could be a divorce, job loss, children leaving for college, separating yourself from a negative person or force and even letting go of a part of yourself (from an addiction, trauma, or relationship). The effects of change can lead to emotional ups and downs like severe anger or numbness or to the return of behaviors that mask our emotions temporarily (drinking, drugs, sex or avoidance of people). Regardless of why you might be feeling grief or loss, the process of grieving can lead you to a healthier life filled with meaning.
