Grief and Loss is a very common contributor to increased substance use. As a substance use counselor, my goal is to help people moderate or stop their use of substances so that they can process their grief and loss in healthy ways. My approach towards grief and loss depends on where my client is at within their process. I take into consideration the five stages of grief (i.e., denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance). I also utilize the power of words and how we can together co-create a narrative representative of your new reality. This is a process, but with time I believe the creation of a narrative yields autonomy and empowerment.

We work through processing grief and loss through meeting people where they are at in the grief process opposed to pushing or pulling them into a place where they are not ready to go. This means that we use a compassionate approach combined with tools and strategies to support movement through the grief process and to create closure and movement forward that honors the loss.

I am sincerely sorry you are suffering. When you lose someone, or something, important, it can be so very painful. I have a very high level of training in helping people with these sorts of pains. Because grief is a normal part of being human, I can’t take it away or rush you through it. However, I can help you identify barriers to grief, and help you prevent the grief process from becoming stuck. I know grief professionally. But I also know grief personally. Losing one of my best friends and my beloved grandparents was hard enough, but facing the untimely death of my father was, and is, a uniquely painful experience. I provide grief and loss therapy in Gilbert, AZ. I understand how hard, confusing, and overwhelming it can be to experience a loss of any type. Losing someone or something that is close to you is devastating and often very traumatic. My approach to grief and loss therapy is to assist you in processing through the pain and emotions you are experiencing as a result of this loss, including grief, sadness, and despair. It is also my goal to help you work through these emotions in order to assist you in moving forward when the time is right and finding a way to navigate through life with a new outlook.
