I use a primarily cognitive-behavioral approach to psychotherapy because there is a circular relationship between thoughts and actions. At some level everything we do is purposeful but may not be effective. For example, pouting when we were four years old may have unfailingly achieved the goal of getting what we wanted from our parents, but may work against us or may leave us with a sense of disappointment toward the people who give in to our demands.
