Atlanta is the ninth most populous metropolitan area in America with around 500,000 people in the city, and over five million in the metropolitan area. The city has also undergone a transformation from a regional commerce city to more of an international influence. From the beginning of the 21st century, the city has grown more than 20%, making it one of the fastest growing cities in America. Atlanta also is known for its stance on the Civil Rights Movement, boasting The City Too Busy to Hate and not following other southern cities that supported segregation. The African American community's perception was different, holding sit-ins and marches to desegregate public facilities. However, the city did become popular as the relocation city for minorities due to the city's progressive civil rights record. The city is also one of three cities within the United States to host the Summer Olympic Games.1

Mental Health in Atlanta

The Fulton County Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is responsible for providing mental health services to residents of Fulton County, particularly the poor. With behavioral health centers around the Atlanta metropolitan area, the department has a wide reach to provide counseling services to children, adults, and families. The department also has outreach programs and rehabilitation services for people addicted to drugs and alcohol.2 With nearly one-fourth of Atlanta's residents living below the poverty line, the services provided by Fulton County are a key factor in helping citizens receive affordable mental health care.3 For additional information about the services provided by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, please call 404-613-3675.

Current Initiatives

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter began a health symposium in 1985, which has convened each year since with the mission to bring awareness to mental health issues in this country and determine the best methods to provide quality care to those living with a mental illness.4 At the 29th Annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy, Mrs. Carter discussed how mental health care could improve with the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sebelius was on hand to discuss the need for insurance to cover mental health-related costs as well as for diseases like cancer and diabetes. For more information about Mrs. Carter's mental health initiative, please call the Carter Center at 404-420-5129.5

Therapy Affordability Meter for Atlanta, GA

Some budgeting needed

While counseling can certainly be an expense for individuals and families in Atlanta, with proper budgeting, it is entirely do-able and the risk/reward is worth it. For some families, it may be difficult to sustain a commitment to therapy without proper insurance coverage. If this is you, ask your therapist about low cost options as practitoners in and around Atlanta may have flexibility or sliding scales. Low cost counseling and affordable therapy are also sometimes offered by listed city and university level clinics, check with your local Atlanta public health department.
