Boise is the capital city of Idaho and the largest city in the state with just over 200,000 people within the city limits, and approximately 635,000 in the metropolitan area. Boise is the largest city between Salt Lake City, Utah and Portland, Oregon, making the city the primary government, economic, transportation and cultural center in southern Idaho. The city sits at approximately 2,700 feet above sea level with the foothills to the northeast of the city and the Owyhee Mountains to the south of the city. The area is most commonly referred to by locals as the Treasure Valley. Others refer to Boise as the City of Trees; however, the city itself is in the high desert, and is sparsely populated with trees.1 Nonetheless, there are more trees in the city, than there are in some of the outer lying areas due to the Boise River that runs through the city.

The Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho works tirelessly to prevent such events from occurring through community outreach and education programs. Transportation to and from appointments is offered, as are home-based visits to assess the family's need for services. Support groups are provided for common veteran's issues, such as PTSD and depression. Programs to help veterans overcome addiction are offered as well. For further information, call 208-422-1000.3

Current Education

Various organizations in Boise offer educational opportunities for children and adults that aim to help residents of all ages deal appropriately with the stresses of daily life. A great way to blow off steam is to exercise. The local YMCA offers many youth activities programs so kids can stay active and learn about healthy ways to manage stress. Basketball, swimming, dance and golf are just a few options.4 For adults, the Catholic Charities of Idaho offer various parenting education courses that focus on developing an active and nurturing relationship with one's children. In particular, parents learn positive techniques for managing inappropriate behavior and encouraging children to take care of their responsibilities, such as homework and chores. Contact the Catholic Charities at 208-345-6031 for more details.5
