You won't be disappointed at the Fountain Place Cinema. All told, we're sure your whole gang will simply love Charleston.

Mental Health in Charleston

While the overall homeless population has declined, the number of former service members without permanent housing has continued to increase in West Virginia. For hundreds of veterans in Charleston, the everyday uncertainty and fear of living in the streets can cause severe anxiety and depression. Though homelessness affects many Americans, veterans are twice as likely to experience it as a result of mental illness.2 Nearly 70 percent of all homeless veterans struggle with substance abuse and addiction, while about half suffer other forms of mental illness such as depression or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.3

As the population of Charleston ages, Alzheimer's Disease is becoming more and more prevalent. To help families better understand the disorder and have access to support services, the Alzheimer's Association offers monthly support groups. The groups provide an understanding environment in which individuals can get professional and peer support as they try to navigate the complexities of caring for a loved one who has Alzheimer's. Information about community resources is available, as is the latest research on the disease and treatments for it. To inquire about meeting times and locations, call 800-272-3900.4

Current Initiatives

The National Assembly on School-Based Healthcare recently began a pilot initiative that seeks to improve and expand school-based mental healthcare statewide. In particular, the initiative seeks to provide low-income families with a means to get quality mental healthcare for their children. To prepare for the program's implementation, school personnel will receive training and technical assistance to ensure a smooth delivery of services to children.
