Historic Charlottesville is steeped in U.S. history, and is also a family friendly city with lots of parks and recreational activities to appeal to young children and teenagers alike. Young children are intrigued by the Virginia Discovery Museum located right downtown at the east end of the pedestrian mall. At the museum, children aged 1-10 can tour a reconstructed log cabin, create a project in the art studio, or ride the child-sized carousel. Older children and teenagers may want to visit the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center to learn how the two famous explorers prepared for their historic trip west. In the summertime, families can cool off in the Washington Park Pool, located in Booker T. Washington Park in the center of town. The park itself has facilities to appeal to children and teenagers alike, with basketball courts, a multi-use field, a picnic shelter and a playground area. The park is also the site of an annual African-American Cultural Arts festival every summer.1

Current Education

The Charlottesville City Public Schools provide a comprehensive education for both special needs students as well as those that are intellectually gifted. The district's gifted program, Quest, is open to students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade who have been identified as having an aptitude for math or English language arts. Students who display giftedness in the arts can participate in ArtsQuest beginning in grade five. All Quest participants attend classes with others in the program to ensure an opportunity for a challenging academic environment and the development of higher-order thinking skills.4 The district's special education programs are available for students who have an identified disability. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan that outlines the district's responsibilities in providing a least restrictive learning environment. Children up to the age of 21 are eligible for services.5
