Colorado Springs is approximately 60 miles south of Denver, which is the capital of Colorado. The city itself sits at around 6,000 feet above sea level, with some areas even higher.1 The location of the city is at the base of Pikes Peak at the eastern edge of the southern Rocky Mountains. Colorado Springs was founded in 1871 with the intention of creating a resort community, which was nicknamed Little London, due to the English tourists that visited the city. With the construction of Antlers Hotel and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, the vision of the city becoming a resort town was turning into a reality. This vision was cast by General William Palmer, who has a lake named after him, as well as a geographic feature called the Palmer.

Mental Health in Colorado Springs

With the United States Air Force Academy located in Colorado Springs, there are tens of thousands of active duty and retired members of the armed forces in the area.2 For many military families, the service of a loved one causes a significant amount of stress and worry when service men and women are deployed. Upon their return from active duty, some soldiers struggle to adjust back to normal life and suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol and drug addiction.3 In fact, from 2000-2011, the number of military members diagnosed with an adjustment or anxiety disorder, depression, or substance abuse rose steadily.4

The Colorado Springs Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers a variety of support groups for community members. Adults living with a mental illness can take advantage of the Connection Recovery Group, at which members can share the challenges and successes of living with a mental illness. The Family Support Group is a place where family caregivers can find resources and interact with other family caregivers in an understanding environment. Those interested in joining one of NAMI's free groups can call 719-473-8477 for further information.5

Current Initiatives

A 2012 initiative proposed by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper that would improve mental health services in Colorado is currently being reviewed after questions arose about the application process. The governor's proposal, which would provide millions of dollars in grants to fund mental health crisis centers across the state, including Colorado Springs, would also fund a crisis hotline and a statewide marketing campaign to bring awareness to Colorado's mental health issues. AspenPointe, a Colorado Springs-based non-profit is among a number of agencies that applied to manage the project.6
