Helena, the capital of Montana, has around 25,000 people in the city, with upwards of 70,000 in the surrounding areas. The town was established in 1864, after the discovery of gold in the Last Chance Creek.1 The main street in Helena is aptly named the Last Chance Gulch, following the path through the historic downtown district. The town was originally named Crabtown after John Crab who was one of the miners who struck gold. In 1888, there were 50 millionaires who lived in the city, which was the largest amount of millionaires per capita than any other city in the world. A wooden fire watch tower that was built in 1886 is the official symbol of the city and still stands on Tower hill which overlooks the historic downtown district. Helena has been the capital of Montana since 1902. Helena has a local ski area, the Great Divide Ski Area, which is northwest of the town near Marysville, Montana, a ghost town.
