Mental Health in Littleton

Mental illness and addiction disproportionately impact ethnic minority groups. To help address these issues among the Native American Community in Littleton, the Denver Indian Family Resource Center offers programs that strengthen families through culturally responsive services. The Family Preservation Program focuses on helping family members acquire the skills needed to cope with stressful life situations. The Dreamcatcher Group helps facilitate skills development for American Indians living in an urban environment. The program focuses on four areas: work, socializing, practical living and personal growth. For additional details about these services, call 303-871-8035.2

Individuals who have difficulty finding or maintaining a job must deal with various other issues that can serve as a barrier to optimal functioning and good mental health. The stress of not having an income can in turn lead to drug or alcohol abuse, conflict at home, and even homelessness. The Center for Work Education and Employment offers various programs that help individuals overcome poverty, while cultivating the skills required of a self-sufficient and independent member of the community. The center helps program participants prepare for employment through job training courses, find employment via short-term job assistance programs, and maintain employment through continued supportive services from the center. To find out more about these programs, call 303-892-8444.3

Nearly 250,000 Coloradans live with a diagnosable mental illness. Aside from the difficulties their illness presents in terms of living a normal daily life, many mentally ill people face undue discrimination. The Colorado chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness works hard to defend the rights of residents who have struggled to maintain good mental health. NAMI's new Law Line provides free legal assistance to those whose rights have been infringed through the process of involuntary commitments, legal actions, in the workplace or in an educational setting. Contact the Law Line at 303-321-3104 to find out how NAMI can help.4

Current Initiatives

After the tragic events at Columbine High School in 1999, the city of Littleton, along with various partners from the public and private sector, established the Greater Littleton Youth Initiative. The central aim of the initiative is to provide programs and services that enhance the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of the city's young people. One such program funded by the initiative is the Incredible Years. Participants in this program develop social-emotional competence, coping skills, and communication skills, all of which promote good mental health. For further details about the initiative and its programs, call 303-795-3700.5
