Louisville has a long and rich history. For instance, Louisville was a major stronghold for Union forces during the Civil War, keeping Kentucky firmly in the Union. The city was also the center for planning, recruiting, supplies and transportation. Fortunately, Louisville was never attacked, but had skirmishes around the city. The Confederate veterans took control of the city after war. In 1875, the first Kentucky Derby was held. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, created the derby.1 The weather in Louisville is a humid, subtropical climate with the summers hot and humid with an average rainfall of approximately 44 inches a year. The winter sees snow usually in January and February. However, due to its location, the area can see a wide variety of temperatures and weather during any season, such as tornadoes, ice storms or thunderstorms, along with severe hot and cold temperatures. The location of city traps air pollution, exemplifying the heat island effect, which is where temperatures in commercial areas are higher than in the suburbs, or where there is more shade lowering temperatures.

Mental Health in Louisville

Louisville residents face a number of common mental health issues, including depression, alcohol addiction, and drug use. These issues are only exacerbated by poverty, which many individuals in Louisville struggle with. In fact, in some neighborhoods in Louisville, 75 percent of residents live below the poverty line.2 With the number of adults reporting mentally unhealthy days on the rise,3 there is a high need for quality mental health care that is both affordable and accessible.

The Kentucky Center for School Safety focuses on reducing the incidence of bullying in schools throughout the state by facilitating the creation of warm and caring school environments for students and staff. The center has developed an online reporting system called the STOP! Tipline. The tipline was devised to provide children with a way to report unsafe situations anonymously. Programs to teach kids about cyberbullying and Internet safety are available as well. For further information, call 877-805-4277.4
