Manhattan is located in the northeastern part of Kansas, and is best known as being the home of Kansas State University. There is also an Army fort located nearby - Fort Riley. The area can be described as having rolling hills. The city itself was built on a floodplain at the convergence of the Kansas and Big Blue rivers. The Tuttle Creek Reservoir was formed when the Big Blue River was dammed for flood control in the mid 20th century, which is has been turned into a state park and is a great place to bring the whole family.1 There is also a natural prairie preserve called Konza Prairie, that is preserved by Kansas State University and the Nature Conservancy. With varying temperatures, the area can receive tornadoes; however, the biggest threat to the area is flooding since the city is built on a floodplain, particularly when there has been a heavy rain.
