Some interesting history of Plymouth includes the Native Americans of the Hopewell culture who buried their deceased in mounds. This ritual dates back to 2,000 years and these mounds are preserved in the Indian Mounds Park. Later, the Dakota Indians used the same burial grounds for their deceased.1 They lived near the mounds until around the mid 1800s, when more and more settlers came into the area and there were treaties made that officially opened the area to settling. Most of the settlers lived near the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers for the trading. The railroad was established during the 1850s heightening the influx of settlers. The Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway were headquartered in Plymouth, which is now part of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The city was known as a frontier and railway town for over a hundred years. It has been called the Last City of the East, and now functions primarily as the state's center of commerce.
