Rancho Santa Margarita is one of the newest cities in Orange County, having been incorporated on January 1, 2000. A master planned community set amongst rolling hills, the city now has nearly 50,000 residents. There are many neighborhoods in the city, including Trabuco Highlands and Melinda Heights. Rancho Cielo is one of the major homeowner associations found in this city. Although the city is now a vibrant and affluent area, in the 1700s it was inhabited by Native Americans. The first Spanish explorer to see the area, Captain Gaspar de Portola, claimed the area for Spain, and a few years later the Spaniards established the Mission San Juan Capistrano.1

Mental Health in Rancho Santa Margarita

The majority of households in Rancho Santa Margarita - 75.5 percent - are married couples. A healthy majority of those households include at least one child under the age of 18. Couples, families, and individuals in the city enjoy an excellent quality of life with quality education, medical services, and mental health care services readily available.2 However, Rancho Santa Margarita does have residents who struggle with problems that are common to cities throughout the state of California. Drug abuse and addiction, marital infidelity, job loss, and depression are just a few of the most often reported issues that couples and families contend with.

Family members of all ages can take advantage of many mental health-related services offered by the city of Rancho Santa Margarita. For children, the city's Youth Drop-In Center offers free programs that teach about character development, leadership skills, communication, and career development. Children who participate in the program gain excellent academic and social skills that allow them to function at a more optimal level. Additional information about these services can be obtained by calling the Youth Center at 949.216.9700, extension 1280. Senior members of the community can take advantage of daily programs, meals and entertainment to stay physically active and mentally alert. Transportation is available for seniors who need to visit the doctor, go to the grocery store, or run other errands. Taxi vouchers are also available to the city's seniors.3

Current Initiatives

Given the large number of veterans in southern California, many of whom have mental health difficulties as a result of their service, the need for accessible behavioral health services is quite high. To help meet this demand, the Orange County Community Foundation has launched the Veterans Services Initiative. The initiative seeks to help veterans transition back into civilian life by providing a host of valuable resources. Information about educational and employment opportunities is provided. Resources for identifying mental health issues such as PTSD and depression are also offered. Many other services are provided as part of the initiative. Call 949-553-4202 for more information.4
