Counseling San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano is a city of over 33,000 people in southern Orange County California. The city was settled around Mission San Juan Capistrano, which was founded by Spanish priests in 1776. Many of the city's homes and businesses reflect the Spanish mission style of architecture. One of the city's most famous points of interest are the cliff swallows that migrated to the area each year from Argentina. However, since 2009, the birds have migrated instead to Chino Hills, which is just north of San Juan Capistrano.1

Mental Health in San Juan Capistrano

Overall, about one-fifth of all Americans live with some kind of diagnosable mental illness, whether it be bipolar disorder, depression, a specific phobia, or chemical dependency. About five percent of Orange County residents report having a mental disorder. Yet, nearly twice as many people in the poorer segments of the county's population report having a mental disorder.2 While San Juan Capistrano is a relatively affluent city, there are many city residents who live day-to-day with a mental health issue. Many of these people do not seek the help they need either because they cannot afford care, do not know where to access care, or because of the stigmas associated with mental illness.

Individuals and families who have a loved one on active duty with the United State Military can join other military family members in a support group at Saddleback Church. The purpose of the group is to provide a loving, caring, and understanding environment in which military family members can discuss their fears and anxieties about having a loved one on active duty. Support group members provide assistance to one another in times of emotional distress, as well as with practical help such as cleaning around the house. Informational gatherings are also provided for individuals who seek more information about strengthening military marriages and signs of PTSD. For further information about this group, call 949-589-1457.3

Current Initiatives

To help address the mental health needs of students, the Orange County Department of Education has implemented the Student Mental Health Initiative. The primary purpose of the initiative is to provide resources for schools to make early identification of mental illness a reality. Additionally, the initiative provides prevention resources to help improve the overall mental health of the county's student population. Programs for staff training are provided, so teachers and other school personnel have the tools they need to identify students with potential mental health problems. Student-based programs seek to promote resiliency, mindfulness, stress management and a host of other positive traits. For further information about the Student Mental Health Initiative, call 714-966-4000.4
