Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It's a disease of the nerves that effects motor control. Although it is rare, it is a severe illness for those who contract it, and individuals suffering from ALS, as well as their friends and family need support. Numerous support groups are offered throughout South Florida.4

Local Initiatives

The Florida Diversity Council is a non-profit that works on education and advocacy for issues surrounding diversity and inclusion. Their Youth Empowerment Summit is a free youth meeting that connects youth with leadership training, volunteer organizations, and mentors. College planning and future employment topics are covered as well. The Council has chapters around the state, including the South Florida area.5
