Tallahassee became the capital of Florida in 1824 with around 160,000 people within the city, and around 336,000 people who live in the metropolitan area.  The city’s name is a Muskogean Indian word that is translated as “old fields”.1 This is thought to originate from the Creek Indians, later named the Seminole Indians who had migrated from the Georgia and Alabama region to the Tallahassee region.  There were several other Indian migrations to this area, such as the Mississippian Indians who built mounds near Lake Jackson back in 1200 A.D. and still are around today and can be viewed within the Lake Jackson Archaeological State Park. Hernando de Soto explored the area and stayed in Tallahassee during the 1538-1539 winter, based on some archaeological artifacts found near the Florida State Capitol and is believed that the first Christmas was celebrated in the United States.  The 1600’s saw many Spanish missions with the largest believed to be the Mission San Luis de Apalachee and has been partially reconstructed by the state.
