Mental Health in Victoria

Children who are subjected to bullying face harassment, intimidation, emotional abuse, and sometimes physical abuse as well. These experiences often lead to depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal. To address these negative behaviors, the Victoria Independent School District has developed a comprehensive program that teaches how to respond to bullies in a healthy way. Online forms make it easy for kids and parents to file a report. Faculty trainings give teachers and other school personnel the tools they need to identify situations and deal with them in an appropriate manner. Call 361-576-3131 for additional information.2 The Victoria Crossroads Kiwanis Club assists the Victoria schools in this endeavor by providing educational programs for elementary school children. These story time programs teach skills and provide tools to children to improve peer relations and reduce bullying.3

Chemical dependency causes many problems in people's lives, from job loss to divorce to homelessness. The Perpetual Help Home seeks to help individuals recover from addiction and rebuild their lives and relationships. Housing is provided particularly for women. While there, residents learn to take responsibility for their actions, develop an understanding of their addiction, and work towards making amends so they can build a healthy future for themselves, their families, and the community at large. Further details about these programs can be obtained by calling 361-575-5335.4

Current Initiatives

The Texas Success Initiative was put in place by the University of Houston-Victoria in order to ensure incoming students had the intellectual, social, and personal skills necessary for success in post-secondary education. More specifically, the initiative seeks to boost student achievement in several core areas, including math, reading and writing. By helping improve skills in these areas, the initiative enables students to be more successful in school, at work, and in life in general.5
