On May 27, 2015 a brown, 38 pound, 15-month-old Staffordshire/pitbull mix, named Caitlyn was found with electrical tape tightly wrapped around her muzzle in Charleston, South Carolina. This abuse exposed her to many life-threatening situations. Caitlyn’s tongue was caught between her teeth, which resulted in the blood flow to her tongue being cut off. She could not bark, eat, pant to cool herself, defend herself or pick anything up. For all intents and purposes, Caitlyn was cut off from the world. Angel Soft toilet tissue has posted an interesting and provocative ad for this Father’s Day. The short video features adult men and women thanking their single mothers for fulfilling the role of mother and father. The ad ends by wishing all the mothers a Happy Father’s Day. The sentiment is sweet; grown children acknowledging the difficulty of solo parenting by mothers, and is clearly designed to bring a tear to the eye of the viewer. According to the Washington Post, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco was invited to speak at a Catholic conference in New York City on June 3.(Gibson, June 3, 2015) The gathering was to discuss reintroducing the Latin Mass, but Cordileone also used his speaking time to declare, “The clear biological fact is that a human being is born either male or female.” He went on to remark about his bewilderment at the concept of gender identity being fluid and socially constructed. He drew laughter in reporting that one university has identified 14 different sexual identities of their students, and that he expects even more to be created over time. [More]

A new study in the June issue of Emotion found a connection between people with the short version of gene 5-HTTLPR and a more significant sense of humor. The study looked at 336 adults, showing them humorous comics and film clips, and rating the participants intensities of smiles or laughter. Those with the shorter alleles had more intense reactions of laughter or smiles and rated the comics or film clips as funnier than those with the longer alleles of the same gene. In past research, the 5-HTTLPR gene has been linked to regulating serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is thought to be related to mood fluctuations. [More]
