A new study published in Science Direct looked at how different dimensions of precarious employment affects mental health. “This is a study that analyzes the relationship between job insecurity and mental health in a Spanish territory (the Basque Country),” study author Erika Valero told us. “Considering the importance of paid work as a social determinant of health, we expected that also in our context, this problem could be related to mental health.” [More]

Having a partner was more beneficial at avoiding loneliness during the first wave of COVID-19 than having children. Research published in the European Journal of Ageing found that whilst those without children and those without a partner were more likely to be lonely, those without a partner underwent a notable shift in their loneliness in the early stages of the pandemic. A new study out of Oregon State University looked at the risk of psychiatric diagnoses in the months after a COVID-19 infection. “Previous work during earlier parts of the pandemic reported a high risk of new mental health conditions occurring following COVID infection,” study author Lauren Chan told us. “This study was intended to determine if that risk still exists for patients in the US including patient data until Fall of 2021.” [More]
