Data published recently in the Anals of Surgery found that child survivors of firearm injury have high rates of new mental health diagnoses, even when compared with children who have injuries in motor vehicle accidents.

More than 20% of adults who were exposed to chronic levels of parental domestic violence in childhood develop major depressive disorder at some stage.
Researchers from the University of Toronto found that 22.5% of adults who witnessed domestic violence between parents later developed major depressive disorder, compared with 9.1% of those who hadn’t witnessed parental domestic violence as children.

A new study published in the Journal of Substance Use and Misuse looked at opioid agonist treatment recipients within criminal justice-involved populations. “Treating individuals who use opioids with medication and counseling support is the gold standard for addressing opioid use disorders, yet the majority of those who need this treatment do not receive it,” study author Wendy P. Guastaferro told us. “For those individuals involved with the criminal legal system, the chances of receiving this life saving treatment is even less.”

A new study published in the Journal of Child Development looked at the effects of napping on preschool children’s learning of letter-sound mappings. The research was carried out by faculty of the Macquarie University in Australia, the University of Oxford, the University of York and the University of Sheffield. “We know that letter-sound learning is essential for early reading acquisition, so we want to explore factors that may help with learning this skill,” study author Dr. Hua-Chen Wang told us. “Sleep has been found to enhance learning. As such, this study looks at whether there's a nap for learning letter-sound associations.”

A new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology looked at miscalibrated expectations and how they create a barrier to deeper conversation. “In this research, we wanted to understand why people often engage in small talk in everyday life rather than initiate deeper and more intimate conversations that might strengthen their social relationships,” study author Michael Kardas told us. “We reasoned that people's decisions about what topics to discuss in conversation are guided by their expectations about the likely outcomes of the conversation.”

Children from less wealthy families are likely to have found COVID-19 lockdowns more difficult due to less time spent in nature than their more affluent peers.
