All of us have heard the old saying that it's important for us to love ourselves. Many of us, however, don't adhere to that in any way that is helpful to us or the people around us. Why do we have to do this? Isn't it just good enough that we love other people well? What in the world does loving myself have to do with anything? What if I think that I'm an unlovable person? Happy Thanksgiving, at least, if you're in the United States that's what today is! If you're reading this right now, then you've likely stumbled upon us after a delicious meal or you're hanging out with your family and watching the football game(s). If you have a mental health issue, there are a lot of things that you need to consider in the process, but one of the most important things that you have to think about is whether or not you are getting the care that you need. In short, you need to be sure that you are getting the right care for your specific needs, and that you are properly diagnosed. But why is this so important? If you’re like many of us who feel better being in control of the situation or tasks, you’re going to have to learn to let that control go. There are studies that indicate that when we physically feel signs stress and anxiety it is our body’s way of trying to tell us that we need to reach out to others. We need to let others know what is going on. We need to pay more attention to our body and what it is trying to tell us. We need to embrace ourselves, love ourselves and treat ourselves with the kindness and compassion that we so often give to others but forget to give ourselves.
