School is now in full swing and children, as well as then parents, are probably experiencing increased demands on their time and their coping abilities. School involves concerns beyond those experienced by parents when they were children. Not only do children today report anxiety about school performance and acceptance, they also deal with increased violence in their place of learning. [More]

Would you have imagined that a Pope would be celebrated for his relaxed and pleasant demeanor? Crowds would assemble and yearn to connect with this ex-bouncer who sees it as part of his calling to wash the feet of a Muslim female prisoner? Or hang on the words of a newly-elected Pope who stands, in muslin, to greet his cardinals rather than receive them from a throne while draped in furs? Who would have expected this? [More]

Netflix Offers One-Year Leave for New Parents: Conflicting Emotional Reactions Result

On August 4, 2015 the streaming video company Netflix, located in Los Gatos, CA, announced a shockingly generous new policy for its employees who become parents: unlimited fully paid leave for mothers and fathers in the first year after the child’s arrival. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, this amount of time and leave is “practically unheard of”. (Lang, M.) Employees are now allowed to work as much or as little as they see fit in that first year as they adjust to bringing a new life into their family. This policy is perhaps a logical extension of Netflix’s long-standing vacation policy, which is that employees may take as much vacation as they want, without any records kept. (Lang. M.) [More]

Women in the workforce has been a hot topic in the past year. What about a woman in a male only field? The National Football League (NFL) recently hired it’s first ever female coach. The Arizona Cardinals recently hired Jen Welter to act as a linebacker intern coach. While Welter is entering an entirely male dominated field, she has no shortage of qualifications for the job. Welter holds a masters in sports psychology, in addition to a PhD in psychology. She also has played internationally as a professional women’s football player. Welter’s hiring brings to light the changing dynamics of many job fields in hiring women, as well as the future of these fields as many groups lobby for equal pay and opportunity for women in traditionally male dominated fields. The Right to Be Forgotten: It's Impact on Freedom of Speech, Identity and Freedom of Information

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is Freedom of Speech. But when does that freedom collide with a person’s right to privacy in our country? As a country, we protect freedom of expression. But our forward moving, electronic society means that each person has a digital footprint. Take for example the silly things one does in high school being posted and coming up in a Google search twenty years later affecting ones job or life in a significant way. Should we have the right to remove information that we do not like or think is no longer relevant? Who decides if it is relevant? These are some of the questions currently being asked because of a recent petition filed in the United States by an advocacy group. [More]

Over the course of the last year, Bill Cosby has fallen hard from his place as a beloved figure in American culture to a disgraced man who is constantly at war for over his legacy. His status as the icon of family entertainment and solid values has been thrown completely into question with the sensational allegations against him, with dozens of women accusing Cosby of having drugged and then raped them. Recently there has been a release of deposition information from 2005 in which Cosby admits to having pursued the purchase of the now illicit drug quaaludes for the purposes of giving it to women in a sexual context. The Changing Face of Marijuana Use

July 7, 2015 14:22 by Dr. Irina Kerzhnerman,Phd  [About the Author]

marijuana
Last month, the City of Miami Beach disclosed that they are considering changing the city ordinance around marijuana possession to allow for a fine rather than incarceration for possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana for personal use. Although there was a time when this kind of policy change would have met with outrage and social protest, the changing climate towards marijuana use in the United States in the past several years makes this legislative consideration not all that surprising. Facebook Pride - Activism or Cause for Concern?

Over the last several weeks, there has been a remarkable swell of celebration following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow gay marriage in America, and in fact all over the world. While this has been visible on television and in the newspapers, nowhere has the depth of the movement in support of gay marriage been more visible than on social media. Anyone who has logged into their Facebook account has seen the overlay of rainbows on the profile pictures of people everywhere. What is surprising is that the rainbow overlay isn't some independent promotion from an outside source, but rather it's a function that was created by Facebook itself, from right at the headquarters of the social media giant.
