The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is Freedom of Speech. But when does that freedom collide with a person’s right to privacy in our country? In February of 2014, a rape accusation of one of the great patriarchs of the 1980’s resurfaced. News casters and reporters were revisiting Bill Cosby, otherwise known as Heathcliff Huxtable’s past accusations of sexual assault against multiple women. Since 2005, women have come forth alleging that Mr. Cosby violated them. Some of the events stemmed as far back as 1970’s but weren’t brought to light until 2005. Mr. Cosby, a man that many perceive as a jovial, loving, fun father figure has recently been characterized as a “monster” who admittedly gave Quaaludes to women with the intent to have sex with them. There is a fight brewing in Indiana regarding continued insurance coverage for applied behavioral analysis for the treatment of autism, and the end result may cause an important ripple, affecting how autism treatment is covered in other states. Parents of an autistic son brought forth a class action suit on April 9th against Indianapolis-based Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield after the insurance company cut services for their son. Over the course of the last year, Bill Cosby has fallen hard from his place as a beloved figure in American culture to a disgraced man who is constantly at war for over his legacy. His status as the icon of family entertainment and solid values has been thrown completely into question with the sensational allegations against him, with dozens of women accusing Cosby of having drugged and then raped them. Last month, the City of Miami Beach disclosed that they are considering changing the city ordinance around marijuana possession to allow for a fine rather than incarceration for possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana for personal use. Although there was a time when this kind of policy change would have met with outrage and social protest, the changing climate towards marijuana use in the United States in the past several years makes this legislative consideration not all that surprising. Over the last several weeks, there has been a remarkable swell of celebration following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow gay marriage in America, and in fact all over the world. While this has been visible on television and in the newspapers, nowhere has the depth of the movement in support of gay marriage been more visible than on social media. Anyone who has logged into their Facebook account has seen the overlay of rainbows on the profile pictures of people everywhere. What is surprising is that the rainbow overlay isn't some independent promotion from an outside source, but rather it's a function that was created by Facebook itself, from right at the headquarters of the social media giant.
